    Wine Warehouse

    Charlottesville, VA

"Distributed audio throughout the retail sales floor, controllable from a smartphone."

    Overview

Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville's premier destination for premium wine and beer, needed a sound system that could create the right atmosphere for browsing, tasting, and shopping. They turned to TES to design a system as refined as their selection.

The solution: distributed audio throughout the entire retail sales floor, fully controllable from a smartphone, giving staff instant, effortless control over the in-store experience.

    The Challenge

A premium wine and beer retail environment creates a specific set of audio requirements that differ meaningfully from a restaurant or a performance venue. Customers at Wine Warehouse are browsing, reading labels, consulting with staff, and making considered purchase decisions. The audio experience needs to support that without overwhelming it. Music that is too loud or too present competes with conversation and shortens dwell time. Music that is too quiet or uneven makes the space feel neglected. The retail floor itself presented practical acoustic challenges. The large, open space featured varied ceiling heights across different sections, and the product displays, shelving units, and wine racks that define the layout absorb and deflect sound unpredictably. Getting even coverage across the entire floor without creating loud spots near speakers and dead zones between them required careful speaker placement and system calibration rather than a standard grid installation. The operational requirement was equally clear. Staff needed to manage the system without any technical complexity. Switching sources, adjusting volume, and cueing up the right playlist for a tasting event or a busy Saturday afternoon had to be something any staff member could do from anywhere in the store without hunting for a control panel or calling for help.

    Our Solution

We began with a coverage analysis of the retail floor, mapping the space against the ceiling heights and display configurations to determine speaker positions that would deliver even sound distribution regardless of where a customer was standing. The product shelving that creates acoustic unpredictability in a space like this was treated as a design constraint to engineer around rather than an obstacle to work past. Ceiling speakers were selected for their dispersion characteristics in a retail environment, prioritizing wide, even coverage at modest volume levels over the kind of high-output performance that a live music venue or large auditorium requires. Positioning was staggered to account for the varied ceiling heights across different sections of the floor, ensuring consistent volume from the front of the store to the back without the system fighting itself. The amplifier at the heart of the system connects directly to smartphone control, giving every staff member on the floor the ability to adjust volume, switch between streaming sources, and manage playlists from their phone without leaving their position or interrupting a customer interaction. No dedicated control panel, no remote to lose, no technical knowledge required. System calibration was completed after installation to tune output levels and frequency response to the specific acoustic character of the retail space, and staff were walked through the full operation of the system before we left.

    The Result

Wine Warehouse now has a sound system that contributes to the experience of being in the store rather than simply filling silence. Coverage is even and consistent across the entire sales floor. There are no loud spots near speakers and no dead zones in the corners. The music sits at the right level for browsing and conversation without demanding attention. Staff operate the system entirely from their phones with no technical knowledge required, which means the right playlist and the right volume for a weekend tasting event or a quiet Tuesday afternoon is always one tap away. The simplicity of the control has made the system a tool the staff actually use rather than one they tolerate. For a retail environment where atmosphere is part of the reason customers choose to shop there rather than online, that outcome directly supports the business.
